Coeliac disease and gluten avoidance in New Zealand children

Abstract: CD affected 1% of these New Zealand children, but 5% reported gluten avoidance. The predictors of gluten avoidance in children without doctor-diagnosed CD suggest important regional differences in community belief or medical practice regarding implementation of gluten avoidance and the contributory role of non-specific subjective abdominal complaints.

“…Th e prevalence of serologically diagnosed CD in this study was found to be 0.71 % , equating to 1.8 million CD suff erers nationwide, yet up to 80 % were previously unaware of the diagnosis of CD and not taking a GFDwhat this data suggests is that the prevalence of the frequency of utilization of a GFD in American individuals is substantially greater than the prevalence of diagnosed CD. Furthermore, recent work from New Zealand has determined that CD aff ected 1 % of children, yet 5 % reported gluten avoidance ( 39 ). Further validating studies are needed elsewhere to determine the use of GFD among the general public, although it does appear clear that a signifi cant proportion are consuming a GFD in the absence of CD.…”

“…Tanpowpong et al [7] reported that 5 % of children without CD avoid gluten-containing food, and that this dietetic restriction in a different cohort is associated with improvement of non-specific behavioral and gastrointestinal complaints [14]. However, it is unclear how many children reporting gluten avoidance were indeed affected by NCGS, as the vast majority of the children were neither tested for CD nor underwent an intestinal biopsy.…”

“…Paradoxically in US population, more people are aware of NCGS than they are of CD [5]. Nowadays, marketers estimate that 15 to 25 % of North American consumers want gluten-free foods, although doctors estimate that just 1 % have CD [6] although recently published data would suggest this to be an overestimation [7].…”

“…Despite this, anecdotal evidence suggests that up to 5% of Australians without CD follow a GFD [21]. Furthermore a crosssectional survey among a cohort of 916 New Zealand children found that 4.3% avoided gluten without a diagnosis of CD [22].…”
