Coexistence of Diversified Dog Socialities and Territorialities in the City of Concepción, Chile

Abstract: There has been scant research on the presence of stray dogs in cities. Studying their very considerable presence in Concepción (Chile) provided a unique opportunity to learn more about the different patterns of sociality and territoriality exhibited by the dog species. Via a set of case studies, we examined the behavior of urban dogs, adopting an ethnographic methodology. This yielded findings of the dogs’ cognitive, social and spatial adjustment abilities, i.e., their territorialities. Our hypothesis was vali… Show more

“…The degree calculated from the dog-to-polygon two-mode network in our study was highly suggestive of affinity of a dog to a place [47,52] as most of the studied dogs were repeatedly seen in the same polygon. Interestingly, there was no statistical difference in the number of dogs between urban and rural polygons.…”

“…The socio-ecology of free-roaming dogs is being increasingly studied in Thailand. In comparison, many common behavioral traits are shared with free-roaming dogs from other countries, such as affinity to a certain place with varying human familiarity [2,52]. The abundance of food provided by human feeders has created a distinct environment for the free-roaming dogs in Thailand.…”

“…The same conclusions were reached by researchers studying the social behavior of stray dogs in urban populations of Rome (Italy) and Concepción (Chile). These dogs also understand the nonverbal cues of a stranger and can use them to adapt to an urban environment, for example, learning to cross the road with a person, relying on his assessment of the safety of the crossing (Bonanni and Cafazzo, 2014;Miternique and Gaunet, 2020). Dogs understand human gestures and tone of voice and are good at distinguishing between threatening and positive behavior and react accordingly.…”
