Cognitive assessment of patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Abstract: Our results show that NAFLD patients may have early or subtle cognitive dysfunction, including in the visuospatial and executive function domains, as indexed by scores on the MoCA test. Further targeted psychometric testing will be required to confirm the presence of cognitive impairment in this population.

“…Recently, we have also published a study showing the cognitive dysfunction (including in the visuospatial and executive function domains) in a NAFLD cohort. 2 In agreement with the study by Weinstein et al, cognitive dysfunction was more likely in those having higher hepatic fibrosis scores. Higher levels of inflammatory cytokines in the white matter circuits seem to coincide with higher destructive effects on the executive functioning.…”

“…Higher levels of inflammatory cytokines in the white matter circuits seem to coincide with higher destructive effects on the executive functioning. 2 Differently, we found cognitive dysfunction in visuospatial domain as well. This may be related to the disruption in the central processing of cognition together with the disengagement of visuospatial attention during executive functioning in metabolic disorders.…”

“…Furthermore, symptoms of NAFLD can be mistaken for somatic anxiety and depression (Elwing 2006). There is emerging evidence linking NAFLD to breast and bowel cancers (Sanna 2016) and to cognitive deficits (Celikbilek 2018). Cognitive deficits (and hippocampal atrophy) are also associated with metabolic syndrome in adolescents (Yau 2012).…”

“…Згідно із сучасними даними, НАЖХП пов'язана зі зниженням рівня пізнавальної діяльності хворих незалежно від наявності кардіоваскулярних порушень [63]. Виявлено також наявність зворотних кореляційних зв'язків когнітивної дисфункції із ступенем фіброзу та відсутність таких кореляцій із ступенем гепатостеатозу та наявністю МС [64].…”
