Cognitive function among physically independent very old people in an urban Japanese community

Abstract: Background:A study was conducted to clarify the characteristics of cognitive function among physically independent very old people dwelling in an urban community in Japan. Methods:Five hundred and thirteen old-old (aged 75-84 years) and 168 oldest-old (aged 85-100 years) adults participated. We carried out the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) for measuring cognitive functions in the elderly. Age-related differences in the total score and subscale scores of the MMSE were analyzed by sex using ANCOVA, contro… Show more

“…29 In the current study, 54.7% had severe to moderate impairment, higher than or similar to previous retrospective relatives' reports in end-of-life studies. 4,6,13 Caution is needed in cross-national comparisons with other surveys of the oldest old that report higher 44,45 and lower 25,39 cognition levels than the current study. Missing data are a particular concern, their extent not always clearly reported.…”

“…Many studies have reported a declining trend of MMSE scores with increasing age (30)(31)(32). The average MMSE score of the healthy oldest-old population in Tokyo was 25 (range 14-30) for men and 24 (range 8-30) for women (33). Moreover, MMSE scores tend to underestimate the cognitive ability of centenarians, because of sensory deterioration (22,25).…”

“…Cognitive function in oldest-old individuals with high physical independence has also been reported. In Japan,Iwasa et al (2005) performed an exhaustive survey on the oldest-old in Itabashi Ward, Tokyo, and a detailed analysis of MMSE subtotals for the physically independent oldest-old was included. The means ± SD for total MMSE scores in the old were 27.53 ± 2.84 in males and 27.77 ± 2.45 in females; and in the oldest-old, they were 25.88 ± 3.35 in males and 24.98 ± 4.32 in females; the total MMSE scores thus being lower in females and oldest-old people.…”
