Coinfection of COVID-19 and Dengue: A Case Report

Abstract: While the COVID-19 pandemic takes the world by storm, dengue-endemic regions risk developing a co-epidemic in COVID-19/dengue coinfection. With both infections as causes of high morbidity rates, the potentially fatal outcomes of coinfection are even greater, and several cases are emerging, severe and moderate, showing how common it may become in certain regions. The case reported here shows a 38-year-old male patient with high-grade fever, with complaints of nausea, joint, and muscle aches, all characteristic … Show more

“…17,18 To develop precise therapeutic strategies and interventions aimed to reduce the severity, comprehending these immune responses is of utmost importance. 19 Similar COVID-19 and dengue coinfection in a Thai patient had nonspecific symptoms and signs as seen in most coinfected patients. 20 The study showed that the patient had fever and myalgia with no visible concerns in the chest X-ray that could confirm lungs infection.…”

“…Several cases were emerged in different countries. In Philippines reported a 38-year-old male patient with high-grade fever, with complaints of nausea, joint, and muscle aches, all characteristic symptoms of COVID-19 and dengue but was not severe, although the tests confirmed the infections to be "moderate to severe" and showed steady and rapid recovery [21]. Previous studies "in Latin America reported that coinfection with SARS-CoV-2 and dengue virus is associated with worse outcomes with significant morbidity and mortality.…”

“…Dengue outbreaks amidst the COVID-19 pandemic led to misdiagnosis due to similar clinical presentation and also increased the likelihood of co-infection [ 16 ]. A case of co-infection was reported by Chowdhury et al which was initially diagnosed as COVID-19 infection due to a positive RT-PCR test but later confirmed as co-infection based on positive reactivity to IgG and IgM antibodies in the dengue duo test [ 17 ]. Another study reported false positive dengue serology in 22% of COVID-19 patients [ 18 ].…”
