“…An anti-apoptotic role for ColVI in the nervous system has also been suggested owing to the effects of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on cultured neurons. In that study, addition of ColVI to the culture medium rescued UV-induced apoptosis and limited dendrite shrinkage, and ColVI was found to mediate this protection by acting through the Akt and JNK pathways (Cheng et al, 2011). These observations provided new insights into the function of ColVI in the central nervous system and also provided new perspectives for the potential role of this ECM component in regulating neuronal survival processes.…”

“…Other SF secreted proteins can be categorized into ECM proteins associated with neurite initiation, growth and elongation, topographic guidance and protection from apoptosis, including FN, LAM, CTGF, CYR61, COL6A2, HSPG2, BGN, MGP and TNC65666768. Moreover, matricellular proteins like MMP2, TIMP, GDNF, PDGF, IGFBPs, THBS and complement factor C1R have been reported to promote neurite extension, adhesion, branching and differentiation as well as protection from neurotoxicity69707172.…”

“…Interaction of Collagen VI with NG2/CSPG4 resulted in increased cell motility in human glioma cell lines 47 . Col VI was found to protect the cells from apoptosis by activating Akt/PI3K pathway 48 and has been reported to be over expressed in breast cancer, ovarian cancer and gliomas 45, 49, 50 . Fibronectin, a glycoprotein with cell adhesive regions on it, plays a major role in the tumor cell migration and invasion through its interaction with partner proteins called integrins 51 .…”
