Collection of mold ( Rhizopus sp.) spores in lieu of pollen by the stingless bee Trigona collina

Abstract: In the course of a study on pollen diets of three sympatric species of stingless bees (Apidae: Meliponini) in Sabah, Malaysia, we made the observation that large fractions of the foragers of three colonies of Trigona collina collected corbicular loads of fungal spores in lieu of pollen. Collection of spores continued for at least three consecutive days. The spores were brought to germination in the laboratory and the culture was identified as mold of the genus Rhizopus (Zygomycota, Mucorales). Our observations… Show more

“…Most bees rely on pollen as the main source of nitrogen and it is collected mainly to feed the larvae [3]. In A. mellifera, the quantity of brood and stored pollen influences the pollen foraging [37].…”

“…Most of these materials have vegetal origin, as pollen, nectar, resin, latex, leaves, trichomes, fragrances, oils, seeds, and so forth. In addition, stingless bees also collect materials of other origins, as animal feces, clay, water, and fungi spores, for example [1][2][3].…”

“…Muitos destes microrganismos naturalmente associados às abelhas representam uma microflora não patogênica (GILLIAM, 1997), sendo muitos ainda desconhecidos. Eltz et al (2002), citando diversos autores, informam que a coleta de fungos por abelhas em substituição ao pólen já foi verificada para espécies dos gêneros Apis, Trigona e Partamona. Teixeira et al (2003) descreveram uma espécie de levedura isolada em abelhas…”

“…Stingless bees of the genus Trigona are highly social and live in perennial colonies with up to several thousand individuals (Wille, 1983;Roubik, 1989Roubik, , 1993. As in honeybees, their principal resources are pollen and nectar, but they also collect materials such as resin, water, sap, wax, honeydew, extrafloral nectar, mud, salts, animal protein, and fungal spores for nutrition or nest-building materials (Roubik, 1989;Eltz et al, 2002). Pollen is the sole resource collected on many flowers (Roubik, 1989).…”
