Colloidal Nanospheres of Amorphous Selenium: Facile Synthesis, Size Control, and Optical Properties

Abstract: This article reports a facile method for the colloidal synthesis of nanospheres made of amorphous selenium (ɑ‐Se). The diameters of the nanospheres can be tightly controlled in the range of 45–157 nm by varying the reaction time and temperature, as well as the amount of the reducing agent. The average size of the nanospheres is measured using transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering while their optical properties are characterized using UV‐vis spectroscopy. We also compute their UV‐vis spe… Show more

“…In this work, a -Se nanospheres served as a substrate to control the nucleation and growth of Au. They were synthesized by sequentially adding 100 mg of PVP and 387 mg of H 2 SeO 3 into 100 mL of deionized (DI) water and magnetically stirred at room temperature for 10 min . Then, 1.16 mL of N 2 H 4 ·H 2 O was introduced under magnetic stirring.…”

“…Nanospheres made of amorphous Se ( a -Se) have recently received increasing interest as a new platform material for nanomedicine owing to their biological activity and pharmacological actions. Upon internalization, they can kill cancer cells by generating reactive oxygen species (ROS) and thereby inducing mitochondria-mediated apoptosis in a dosage-dependent manner . Their relatively inert surface, however, calls for modification with a noble metal, followed by conjugation with a bioactive ligand.…”

“…It can be converted into amorphous selenium (a-Se) by melt quenching, vapor deposition, or ball milling. Similarly to gray Se, a-Se consists of helical chains . Solution-based methods have been developed for the preparation of a-Se, for example, by the reduction of H 2 SeO 3 with hydrazine in aqueous or polyol solutions. , …”
