Colocation for SLAM-Tracked VR Headsets with Hand Tracking

Abstract: In colocated multi-user Virtual Reality applications, relative user positions in the virtual environment need to match their relative positions in the physical tracking space. A mismatch between virtual and real relative user positions might lead to harmful events such as physical user collisions. This paper examines three calibration methods that enable colocated Virtual Reality scenarios for SLAM-tracked head-mounted displays without the need for an external tracking system. Two of these methods—fixed-point … Show more

“…While their method markedly improved the spatial consistency between collocated users, it was only applied to the homogeneous VR users who employed the HTC Vive system. Unlike the previous approaches based on either the fixed-point calibration or the markerbased calibration, Reimer et al [14] exploited hand tracking data as spatial anchors of colocated users wearing SLAMenabled VR headsets such as Meta Quest. For effective calibration between the colocated users, their method used an additional device capable of hand tracking.…”

“…Problems ( 14) and (16) were solved in polynomial time by an adaptive voting algorithm [30]. The TLS rotation estimation (15) was relaxed to a tight semidefinite relaxation problem and quickly solved using the graduated non-convexity [31]. In addition, the estimation was used in a maximal clique inlier selection (MCIS) [32] after the scale estimation.…”

“…These systems send key points and descriptors to the cloud for content localization. Certain solutions use visual landmarks for spatial anchors (data matrices, hand tracking) [15]. Such solutions have limitations because they require constant landmark visibility and calibration.…”

“…Other examples of devices with inside-out tracking are the Microsoft Hololens and the Magic Leap. Some further works of interest demonstrate co-location for SLAMtracked VR headsets with hand tracking (Reimer et al, 2021) and motion capturing with a combination of inertial sensors and a camera (Yi et al, 2023). They obtain 3D positional data by implementing real-time room mapping and positional tracking that is based on visual-inertial simultaneous localization and mapping (viSLAM) techniques.…”
