Colonization of Brazil by the cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) revealed by mitochondrial DNA

Abstract: The cattle egret (Bubulcus ibis) has recently colonized Brazil. This process offers an excellent opportunity for the study of colonization and dispersal patterns across extensive areas by non-native birds. The aims of the present investigation were a) to determine the genetic diversity of the cattle egret in Brazil and Africa, b) evaluate genetic differentiation between populations in different regions of Brazil and Africa, and c) detect genetic signs of demographic expansion in these two areas. Mitochondrial … Show more

“…This species is native to Africa and Mediterranean Europe (Rice 1956) and is associated with large grazing mam mals rather than with aquatic environments (MartínezVilalta et al 2014a). This species was first recorded in Brazil in 1964 (Sick 1965), where its occurrence is facilited by the presence of livestock (Sick 1997, Bella and AzevedoJúnior 2004, Seedikkoya et al 2005, Nunes et al 2010, MoralezSilva and Lama 2014. It is commonly found foraging among cattle (Gasset et al 2000, MartínezVilalta et al 2014a and capturing the insects that are associated with or get displaced by these large animals.…”
