Color based depth up-sampling for depth compression

Abstract: 3D scene information can be represented in several ways. In applications based on a (N-)view plus (N-)depth representation, both view and depth data is compressed. In this paper we present a depth compression method containing an depth upsample filter which uses the color view as prior. Our method of depth down-/up-sampling is able to maintain clear object boundaries in the reconstructed depth maps. Our experimental results show that the proposed depth re-sampling filter, used in combination with a standard st… Show more

“…Then, the intensity image I(u) captured by Kinect at the same time is segmented to a number of clusters that groups pixels that have relatively small Cartesian distance with each other, with similar intensities. Under an assumption that the depth edges often coincide with sharp intensity changes 123 , 4 the segmentation of I(u) is used to partition D ′ (u ′ ) to corresponding clusters whose depth values are expected to represent a planar structure. Therefore by fitting plane formula to each of depth cluster DC k , we gain a mathematical foundation to base the upsampling of D ′ (u ′ ).…”

“…Some methods directly down-sample depth maps to save the bit rate [23]. To solve the degradation problem caused by large scaling factors, [30] proposed a color based depth up-sampling method using the color frames as a prior to obtain high resolution depth maps on the decoder side. These methods have shown the correlation between depth maps and their corresponding texture frames can be utilized to improve depth maps compression.…”

“…Hence, edge-preserving downsampling for depth map should be considered even though traditional image downsampling techniques use linear filters not designed to preserve edges. For example, in [8] and [9], the median value of an N N window was chosen as the most representative value to be used at reduced-resolution depth map (where factor N specifies the downsampling ratio).…”

“…In various works, e.g. [9] and [10], cross-component bi-lateral filtering has been used for depth upsampling. In a cross-component bi-lateral filter, the similarity of co-located texture samples is used to derive filter weights for depth in addition to the conventional filtering window applied spatially for the depth samples.…”
