Color Correction Preprocessing for Multiview Video Coding

Abstract: In multiview video, a number of cameras capture the same scene from different viewpoints. There can be significant variations in the color of views captured with different cameras, which negatively affects performance when the videos are compressed with inter-view prediction. In this letter, a method is proposed for correcting the color of multiview video sets as a preprocessing step to compression. Unlike previous work, where one of the captured views is used as the color reference, we correct all views to ma… Show more

“…The test sequences are in YUV 4:2:0 format and have been already rectified using the homography matrix. For our experiment, before encoding is performed by our proposed scheme or by MVC standard, all the test sequences have been color-corrected using the technique recommended in [8].…”

“…This allows the system to adapt the color restoration algorithm to the current environmental conditions and also to the task requirements. Colin et al propose a method for correcting the color of multiview video sets as a preprocessing step to compression [37]. Distinguished from a previous work, where one of the captured views is used as the color reference, they correct all views to match the average color of the set of views.…”

“…In our implementation, we use a simple histogram-matching algorithm [9]. More complex algorithms [10], [11] can also be employed to correct the illumination and color variations. However, it should be noted that the global illumination compensation operation can help in correcting variations in global illuminations across the input images but does not correct for local illumination variations, such as varying shadows and reflections that are due to the presence of different foreground objects in each image.…”
