Color Stability Over Time of Three Resin‐Based Restorative Materials Stored Dry and in Artificial Saliva

Abstract: The results found in this study demonstrated that the Vitapan Classical shade guide tab A2 provided a better color match than the respective shade guide tabs A2 supplied by the composite manufacturers. If custom shade tabs are to be made, however, they could be kept in a box and used as shade references from 14 days after being fabricated, when color stabilizes.

“…Visual thresholds greatly supplement traditional descriptive and analytical statistics in color research. Perceiving a difference in color and whether this difference is acceptable is of paramount importance, and has been used dental research for interpreting bleaching efficacy, comparing between visual and instrumental shade matching, dental shade guides, and other areas related to color compatibility, color stability, and color interaction …”

“…Of note, after 4 months of wine storage, the presence of modeling liquid had no beneficial effect on the color stability of the RC, although this was only observed if the material was polished (Figure 1d and Table 1). The staining of the composite restorations has been revealed to be a time-dependent process, 21 and it may be that a duration of 4 months is too short to detect significant differences between two distinct treatment modalities. After 6 months of wine storage, significant differences were observed between the specimens with and without modeling liquid, regardless of the polishing state of the material.…”

“…However, little is known about the variables influencing the intrinsic color change occurring after the light-activation [21]. Since the final color of a resin composite is curing-dependent, it may be hypothesized that different light-activation protocols would play a role in the final color of the material.…”
