Color variability and relationship with basic density and extractive content of Calycophyllum spruceanum wood

Abstract: There are reports relating color to extractives, however there is a lack of information about the effect of other characteristics on the colorimetry of wood. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the longitudinal and radial variability of color and its relationship with the basic density and extractive contents of Calycophyllum spruceanum wood from a six-year-old plantation located in Rio Branco, Acre, Brazil. The determination and assessment of the wood color were carried out by the Commission Internationale de … Show more

“…In this research, we are observed which reddish woods presented higher basic density, with emphasis for the species A. leicontei, D. odorata e H. courbaril (see Table 3 and Figure 3). Similarly, Silva et al (2019) found a positive correlation (r = 0.77) between color coordinate a* and wood basic density of Calycophyllum spruceanum. According to Martins et al (2015), the presence of certain chemicals in a greater or lesser amount in different parts of the trunk influenced the red shade of the wood.…”

“…The correlation analyses between the basic density and the color variables indicate that colorimetry can be used as a tool in the quality control of wood (SILVA et al, 2019), since the basic density is an important indicator of the strength, hardness, and durability of the wood (ARAÚJO, 2007). However, because of the large variability between species, a distinct or a species-specific pattern of correlations between the wood basic density and the colorimetric variables should be considered (GARCIA et al, 2014) so that species-specif standards can be drawn.…”

“…Sendo que, a tonalidade das peças madeireiras tem grande importância em suas aplicações práticas, visto que para a produção de pisos e móveis a cor é um parâmetro estético relevante. Os extrativos influenciam ainda, no odor das madeiras, principalmente nas espécies tropicais que são diversificadas, desde sua quantidade até a natureza química de sua composição (Zeniya, Endo-Ujiie, Obataya, Nakagawa-Izumi e Matsuo-Ueda, 2018; Silva et al, 2019).…”
