Colorectal Cancer and Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Abstract: Inflammatory bowel disease I"D with its two entities, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, is at increased risk of developing colorectal cancer CRC . Risk factors for CRC are represented by the duration of the disease, extent of disease, the association of primary sclerosing cholangitis, family history, and early age at onset. In inflammatory bowel disease, colonic carcinogenesis appears on an inflamed colon, being determined by different genetic alterations. The main element of the process of carcinogenesi… Show more

“…Cancers are characterized by an uncontrolled division of a group of cells, with the ability to invade other tissues in the body, either by a direct growth in those tissues or by the migration of cells to more distant places in the body (metastasis) [ 76 ]. In most cases of cancer, no specific cause of the disease can be identified [ 77 ]. Risk factors for cancer include exposure to anthropogens, chemicals, eating habits, and lifestyle [ 78 ].…”

“…CRC is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer type in the USA [9]. Risk factors of CRC include older age, obesity, alcohol use, tobacco use, family history of CRC, hereditary genetic mutations, and presence of inflammatory bowel disease (the duration, extent, age at onset, and the relation of primary sclerosing cholangitis of the IBD further affect CRC risk) [10]. CRC arises from the formation of polyps, unusually large growths in the colon or rectum.…”
