Colorectal cancer survival among Ministry of National Guard-Health Affairs (MNG-HA) population 2009–2017: retrospective study

Abstract: Background Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the most diagnosed cancer among males and third among females in Saudi Arabia, with up to two-third diagnosed at advanced stage. The objective of our study was to estimate CRC survival and determine prognostic factors. Methods Ministry of National Guard- Health Affairs (MNG-HA) registry data was utilized to identify patients diagnosed with CRC between 2009 and 2017. Cases were followed until December 30th, 2017… Show more

“…Previous studies reported 5-year survival rates among Saudi population between 44%-52% (Alsanea et al, 2015;Alyabsi et al, 2021), compared with more than 60% in the USA (Siegel et al, 2021). Stage for stage, the 5-year survival was 80% for localized stage, 63% for regional stage and 20% for distant metastasis (Alyabsi et al, 2021). These rates are lower than reported 5-year survival rates from USA which ranges from 90% for patients diagnosed with localized disease to 14% for those diagnosed with et al, 2021).…”

“…Data on survival of CRC in Saudi Arabia is limited. “…Available data clearly show the importance of early diagnosis, supported by the overall survival (OS) rate of CRC patients depending on the stage at which the primary tumor is diagnosed. Based on data from a retrospective population study [ 5 ], 5-year OS is 78.85% for the localized stage (stages I–II), 63.25% for the regional stage (stage III), and 20.31% for the metastatic stage (stage IV). Another study evaluating stage-dependent OS in CRC found 94%, 82%, 67%, and 11% for stages I, II, III, and IV, respectively [ 6 , 7 ].…”

“…In Saudi Arabia, the total number of surgeries during the year 2020 was 398,188 and 46,831 of them were implemented at the Ministry of National Guard-Health Affairs (MNG-HA) [10]. More than 80% of the CRC patients at the MNG-HA are treated surgically [11], and hence elucidating the surgical outcomes of these patients is crucial. Similar to the US Veteran Affairs (VA) health system, the MNG-HA is a health system that covers eligible members in all regions of Saudi Arabia.…”
