This empirical research note documents the relationship between composition of a firm's workforce (with a special focus on age and gender) and its performance with respect to innovative activities (outlays and employment in research and development (R&D)) for a large representative sample of enterprises from manufacturing industries in Germany using unique newly available data. We find that firms with a higher share of older workers have significantly lower proportions of R&D outlays in total revenues and of This paper is part of the project KombiFiD -Kombinierte Firmendaten für Deutschland that is financially supported by the German Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). Zusammenfassung Der Beitrag gibt einen Überblick über die Nutzung von Längs-schnittdaten für Betriebe und Unternehmen aus Erhebungen der amtlichen Statistik durch empirische Wirtschaftsforscher. Nach einem Rückblick auf die Entwicklung seit 1990 werden die unterschiedlichen Typen von Firmendaten vorgestellt und es werden exemplarisch Projekte beschrieben, die diese Daten nutzen. Anschließend werden die Probleme diskutiert, die bei der Arbeit mit diesen Daten in den Forschungsdatenzentren der Statistischen Ämter auftreten. Der Beitrag schließt mit Skizzen zu zwei Szenarien für eine zukünftige Entwicklung.Abstract This paper gives an overview over the use of longitudinal data for establishments and enterprises from surveys performed by the statistical offices in empirical economic research. It sketches the developments in this field since 1990, introduces the different types of data, and describes selected projects that use the data. Furthermore, problems related to the work with these data inside the research data centers of the statistical offices are discussed, and two alternative scenarios of future developments are outlined.
