Combined transanal total mesorectal excision (taTME) with laparoscopic instruments and abdominal robotic surgery in rectal cancer

Abstract: Laparoscopic surgery for rectal cancer can be technically challenging. We describe a hybrid technique combining abdominal robotic dissection and transanal total mesorectal excision. This procedure was performed in a 50-year-old man with rectal adenocarcinoma at 5 cm from the dentate lane. Preoperative staging was T2N0M0. Surgery went well without complications, and estimated blood loss was less than 50 mL. Robotic surgical time was 90 min, and total operative time was 160 min. The patient was discharged on pos… Show more

“…Cohort studies have shown the feasibility of this new technique and 1,2 improved total mesorectal excision (TME) specimen quality, potentially minimizing surgical morbidities. [9][10][11][12][13] GelPOINT Path Transanal Access Platform (Applied Medical, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, USA) is currently the commonly-used adjunct because of its flexibility and air-sealing quality during transanal dissection. 7,8 of The TaTME technique has been applied in conjunction with various traditional procedures to achieve maximal benefits to patients.…”

“…7,8 of The TaTME technique has been applied in conjunction with various traditional procedures to achieve maximal benefits to patients. [9][10][11][12][13] GelPOINT Path Transanal Access Platform (Applied Medical, Rancho Santa Margarita, CA, USA) is currently the commonly-used adjunct because of its flexibility and air-sealing quality during transanal dissection. However, it is difficult to establish stable imaging and results in extra costs to the health-care system because of the costly single-use consumables.…”
