Combining ability and gene action for fruit yield and its attributes in brinjal (Solanum Melongena L.)

Abstract: Gentic studies for fruit yield per plant and its attributing traits in brinjal was conducted by following line x tester mating design comprising of seven lines and four testers at Instructional Farm, Junagadh Agricultural University, Junagadh, Gujarat. The analysis of combining ability revealed the predominant role of both additive and non-additive gene effects in the inheritance of fruit yield and its component traits. The genotypes NSR-1, JBG-10-208 and Pant Rituraj displayed high gca effect for fruit yield… Show more

“…Thus these traits might be governed by dominance, additive × dominance and/or dominance ×dominance epistatis. Similar results have been obtained by [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15].…”

“…Hence selection of hybrids based on sca effects would excel in their heterotic effect. These crosses exhibited significant sca effect indicating the presence of dominance and epistatis type of gene action these findings were similar with the findings of [25,21,7,18,9,10,19,20,11,14,13]. The three promising hybrids are SMB115× DBL02 IBWL2001-1× Pant Rituraj and PB66×Pant Smart could be included for exploitation of hybrid vigour in brinjal.…”

“…The predominance of additive type of gene action (σ 2 gca/σ 2 sca > 1) for the rest of the characters indicated the use of simple selection technique and recombination breeding followed by the pedigree method of selection. Same trends were observed for fruit length by Rai and Asati (2011) [7] , and for the number of fruits per plant by Singh and Chaudhary (2018) [6] . Vaddoria and Ramani (2015) [4] also obtained the same trends for days to first picking, fruit girth, fruit weight, plant spread, and fruit borer infestation.…”

The mean sum of squares due to GCA and SCA alone may not give us an accurate depiction of gene effects and therefore, the ratio of variances due to GCA and SCA was calculated.…”
