Present investigation was carried out during autumn winter season 2013-14 and 2014-15 at the Vegetable Research Centre of GBPUA&T, Pantnagar with 43 genotypes including 10 lines, 3 testers and 30 F1’s of brinjal. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with three replications. The observations were recorded for 11 characters. Variances due to testers were greater than variances due to lines for most of the characters. The estimates of General Combining Ability (GCA) effect indicated that PB71, BB85, PB66, Swarn Syamli and DBL02 were best general combiner for earliness (days to 50% flowering), whereas the best specific cross was BRLVAR6 × DBL02. For weight of marketable fruits per plant PB66, SMB115, LC7, BRLVAR6 were best general combiners and SMB115 × DBL02, PB66 × Pant Samrat and IBWL 2001-1 × Pant Rituraj were best specific combiners. Pant Rituraj was found best general combining effect for plant height, fruit diameter, weight of marketable fruits per plant, number of unmarketable fruits per plant, total yield per plant and total yield per hectare. Pant Samrat showed good General Combining Ability (GCA) effects for number of primary branches per plant, number of marketable fruits per plant, weight of unmarketable fruits per plant and total number of fruits per plant. DBL02 was recorded best general combiner for earliness and fruit length. SMB115 and PB 66 were best general combiners for most of the yield characters. SMB115 × DBL02, PB66 × Pant Samrat and IBWL2001-1 × Pant Rituraj were showed highest Specific Combining Ability (SCA) effect for most of the characters. Therefore, these cross combinations could be commercially exploited for higher yield.

Hybrids of the brinjal (Solanum melongena L.) are gaining popularity in the past few decades. Meanwhile, heterosis breeding provides much scope to obtain such hybrids with great yielding potential and outstanding fruit quality (size-shape, pest-free and rich in beneficial biochemicals). These facts motivated us to get inside into the combining ability and gene actions of 8 lines, 6 testers and their resultant 48 hybrids for 15 yield and its attributing traits by adopting Line × Tester analysis at 3 research stations of the S.D.A.U.; located in 3 different districts, during late rabi 2021-22 in RBD. For the majority of the traits, there were significant variations caused by environments, parents, and hybrids, suggesting the material's high degree of variability. Analysis of gene action showed a preponderance of both non-additive and additive gene actions for various traits. Ph-9, PPL, and ISD-006 were the good general combining parents for major yield and its attributed traits. For fruit yield per plant, the top five good specific combiners were Arka Komal × GRB 5, Ph-6 × P. Anupam, Ph-9 × GAOB 2, Ph-9 × Arka Harshita and ISD-006 × GRB 5. Also, for at least one yield component, they showed a highly significant sca value. High × High gca combinations didn't show high sca effects every time. Incorporating ISD-006 × GRB 5 hybrid with its good combining parents into the breeding programme would certainly improve the quantity and quality of fruits in brinjal.

The results of ANOVA for combining ability revealed that the mean sum of squares for both GCA and SCA were highly significant for all the traits under investigation (excluding days to 50% flowering). This indicates the involvement of both additive and non-additive gene actions in the inheritance of all analyzed traits while, for days to 50% flowering only the GCA mean sum of squares was highly significant which indicates that additive gene action was involved in the inheritance of this trait. The σ 2 SCA was higher than σ 2 GCA for all traits which earlier recorded for both types of significant gene action denoting the prevalence of non-additive gene action for these traits except days to 50% flowering. The highest GCA effect was observed in AB-08-14 for fruit yield plant -1 , fruit diameter and number of marketable fruit plant -1 . AB-08-14 × GBL-3, AB-08-14 × Pusa Kranti and JDNB-110 × NBL-15 were the top 3 best specific combiners for fruit yield plant -1 . Furthermore, the parents with the best per se performance were also observed as the best general combiners indicating a positive coalition between per se performance and GCA and the hybrids with high SCA effects do not necessarily involve the parents exhibiting high GCA effects. Which showed the importance of inter-allelic interactions for the inheritance of such traits. SCA which have non-fixable genetic materials were potential parameters for heterosis breeding for brinjal where, commercial exploitation of heterosis is feasible and choice of best hybrid combination based on GCA and SCA effects supplemented with per se performance could be more realistic and useful.
