Combining hand techniques with electric pumping increases the caloric content of milk in mothers of preterm infants

Abstract: Objective: We previously reported that preterm mothers' milk production can exceed levels of term mothers by using early hand expression and hands-on pumping (HOP) with the highest production (955 ml per day) in frequent users of hand expression. There is some evidence that combined hand and electric pumping increases the energy content of milk 6. However our donors do not receive specific instructions on the timing or mode of expression, other than it can be hand expressed or pump expressed but not ‘drip’ collected milk.…”
