The cultural heritage community is increasingly exploring synchrotron radiation (SR) based techniques for the study of art and archaeological objects. When considering heterogeneous and complex micro-samples, such as those from paintings, the combination of different SR X-ray techniques is often exploited to overcome the intrinsic limitations and sensitivity of the single technique. Less frequently, SR X-ray analyses are combined with SR micro-photoluminescence or micro-Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy, which provide complementary information on the molecular composition, offering a unique integrated analysis approach. Although the spatial correlation between the maps obtained with different techniques is not straightforward due to the different volumes probed by each method, the combination of the information provides a greater understanding and insight into the paint chemistry. In this work, we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the combination of X-ray techniques and SR-based photoluminescence through the study of two paint micro-samples taken from Pablo Picasso's Femme (1907). The painting contains two cadmium yellow paints (based on CdS): one relatively intact and one visibly degraded. SR micro-analyses demonstrated that the two Cd-yellow paints differ in terms of structure, chemical composition, and photoluminescence properties. In particular, on the basis of the combination of different SR measurements, we hypothesize that the degraded yellow is based on nanocrystalline CdS with high presence of Cd(OH)Cl. These two characteristics have enhanced the reactivity of the paint and strongly influenced its stability.

In this study, a combination of X-ray excited optical luminescence (XEOL), time-resolved XEOL (TR-XEOL) and the Hanbury-Brown and Twiss (HB-T) interferometer at the Taiwan Photon Source (TPS) 23A X-ray nanoprobe beamline for exploring quantum materials is demonstrated. On the basis of the excellent spatial resolution rendered using a nano-focused beam, emission distributions of artificial micro-diamonds can be obtained by XEOL maps, and featured emission peaks of a selected local area can be obtained by XEOL spectra. The hybrid bunch mode of the TPS not only provides a sufficiently high peak power density for experiments at each beamline but also permits high-quality temporal domain (∼200 ns) measurements for investigating luminescence dynamics. From TR-XEOL measurements, the decay lifetime of micro-diamonds is determined to be approximately 16 ns. Furthermore, the XEOL spectra of artificial micro-diamonds can be investigated by the HB-T interferometer to identify properties of single-photon sources. The unprecedented strategy of combining XEOL, TR-XEOL and the HB-T interferometer at the X-ray nanoprobe beamline will open new avenues with significant characterization abilities for unraveling the emission mechanisms of single-photon sources for quantum materials.

Understanding the optoelectronic properties of optically active materials at the nanoscale often proves challenging due to the diffraction-limited resolution of visible light probes and the dose sensitivity of many optically active materials to high-energy electron probes. In this study, we demonstrate correlative synchrotron-based scanning X-ray Excited Optical Luminescence (XEOL) and X-ray Fluorescence (XRF) to simultaneously probe local composition and optoelectronic properties of halide perovskite thin films of interest for photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices. We find that perovskite XEOL stability, emission redshifting, and peak broadening under hard X-ray irradiation correlates with trends seen in photoluminescence measurements under continuous visible light laser irradiation. The XEOL stability is sufficient under the intense X-ray probe irradiation to permit proof-of-concept correlative mapping. Typical synchrotron X-ray fluorescence and nano-diffraction measurements use acquisition times 10-100x shorter than the 5-second acquisition employed for XEOL scans in this study, suggesting that improving luminescence detection should allow correlative XEOL measurements to be performed successfully with minimal material degradation. Analysis of the XEOL emission from the quartz substrate beneath the perovskite reveals its promise for use as a real-time in-situ X-ray dosimeter, which could provide quantitative metrics for future optimization of XEOL data collection for perovskites and other beam-sensitive materials. Overall, the data suggest that XEOL represents a promising route towards improved resolution in the characterization of nanoscale heterogeneities and defects in optically active materials that may be implemented into X-ray nanoprobes to complement existing X-ray modalities.
