Combustion and atmospheric oxidation of hydrocarbons: Theoretical study of the methyl peroxyl self-reaction

Abstract: Alkyl peroxyls form in the atmospheric oxidation of hydrocarbons and in their combustion. When NO concentration is low, they can appreciably react with themselves. This reaction has both propagation and termination channels. Multireference second-order perturbative energy calculations CAS(16,12)-PT2/6-311G(2df,p) have been carried out on the CAS(8,8)-MCSCF/6-311G(d,p) geometries pertaining to the reaction pathways explored. The tetroxide intermediate put forward first by Russell in 1957 is found as a stable en… Show more

“…[29,28,34] The branching fractions reported in Scheme 5 are the result of numerical simulation (see below) of the experimentally observed product distribution of b-pinene. The reported values are in agreement with the quantitative struc-ture-activity relationship (QSAR) suggested by Capouet et al (i.e., (50 AE 20) % non-terminating cross-reactions for primary peroxyl radicals).…”

“…According to Ghigo et al, [29] this leads to a loose complex, consisting of triplet oxygen and two alkoxyl radicals [Reaction (3)]. Hasson et al described the complex rather as alkoxyl and trioxyl radicals, with ROOOC decaying into 3 O 2 and ROC.…”

“…A second kind of kinetic study involves the destruction of the butyl peroxy radicals, which is generally via a self-reaction mechanism. 21 Simple kinetic experiments using CRDS spectral lines as a diagnostic enable us to follow the isomer, and possibly conformer, dependent kinetics.…”
