Combustion Reaction During Mechanical Alloying Synthesis of Ti3SiC2Ceramics from 3Ti/Si/2C Powder Mixture

Abstract: Mechanical alloying (MA) synthesis of Ti3SiC2 from a stoichiometric elemental powder mixture of Ti, Si, and C was conducted by using a planetary mill with a specially designed MA jar, which enables the real‐time measurement of temperature and gas pressure during the MA process. Sudden gas pressure and temperature rises were detected when the mixed powders were mechanically alloyed for a certain period, and consequently a large amount of Ti3SiC2 particles was synthesized. Using the Ti–Si–C system as an example,… Show more

“…3. These rigid and porous bulks with the size of 1-1.5 cm were very similar to the result reported by Li et al [2], suggesting that mechanically induced self-propagating reaction (MSR) [10] occurred during 10 h of ball milling. The MSR resulted in the transformation of the element mixture powders to Ti 3 SiC 2 , TiC, TiSi 2 (Fig.…”

“…A variety of methods of synthesizing Ti 3 SiC 2 have been reported. Li et al [2,3] successfully synthesized Ti 3 SiC 2 by mechanical alloying (MA) of elemental Ti, Si and C powder mixtures. Using similar methods, Orthner et al [4] and Li and Zhai [5] obtained a product mixture with TiC as the main component, plus a small amount of Ti 3 SiC 2 and silicides.…”

“…Additionally, weak peaks of TiO 2 were also observed. The content of Ti 3 SiC 2 of the product was estimated to 83 wt%, which was relatively high compared with the value published in the literatures [2][3][4].…”

“…Ti 3 SiC 2 was also successfully synthesized by mechanical alloying of elemental mixtures of Ti, Si and C [2][3][4]. Takeshi Tsuchida [5] developed a technique combing mechanical activation and SHS by milling.…”

“…Various synthesis routes to different forms of Ti 3 SiC 2 have been explored since the 1960s [3], such as temperature-programming heating [4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11], hot pressing or hot-isostatic pressing [1,[12][13][14][15] and chemical vapor deposition (CVD) [16][17][18]. However, to the best of our knowledge, the growth process of Ti 3 SiC 2 has not been reported, due to difficulties in observing the morphologies formed during the initial stages of single-crystal growth.…”
