Commemoration of the Participants of the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921 as a Component of the National Movement of the 1960s–1970s

Abstract

The purpose of the article is a comprehensive analysis of commemoration of the participants of the Ukrainian revolution of the beginning of the 20th century as a form of resistance to the Soviet regime in the 1960s and 1970s. The basis of the source base of the research are the documents of the Sectoral State Archives of the Security Service of Ukraine (SSA SSU) and the materials of the self-published dissident journal "Ukrainian Herald". The methodological basis of the article is the principles of objectivity, historicism, comprehensiveness, continuity, as well as a set of general scientific and special historical methods. The scientific novelty of the research lies in the fact that this problem has not yet become the subject of a full-fledged study in modern Ukrainian historiography. The author concludes that commemoration of the soldiers of the Legion of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen (USS), the Ukrainian Galician Army (UHA) and other participants of the Ukrainian Revolution, the arrangement and preservation of their graves in the 1960s and 1970s became one of the forms of resistance to the Soviet regime and was actively supported by the participants of the dissident movement. Pre-Soviet and foreign historical literature, which was distributed among dissidents, played a significant role in preserving the public memory of the events of the Ukrainian Revolution and its participants. The key place of commemoration of the fighters for Ukrainian statehood was the military memorial at Yanivskyi cemetery in Lviv; it was also possible to record separate cases of guarding the graves of participants of the Ukrainian revolution in Ivano-Frankivsk and Horodok
