Common sources of occupant dissatisfaction with workspace environments in 600 office buildings

Abstract: Previously unpublished data from over 600 office buildings in the Center for the Built Environment (CBE) Occupant Survey database are used to perform a systematic analysis of dissatisfaction in contemporary workspaces. A total of 81% of respondents expressed dissatisfaction with at least one aspect of their workspace, and 67% with more than one. Acoustics were the most common source of dissatisfaction, particularly related to people talking, speech privacy, and phones. Other challenges included a perceived lac… Show more

“…The benefits brought by the OCC predictive control compared with traditional control strategy [27]. Unevenly distributed temperature in different regions accounted for 43% of people dissatisfied with the temperature in more than 600 buildings [66]. This study's occupant-centric control method can adjust supply air parameters based on the occupant number in different partitions, meet the cooling demand in different zones, and create a comfortable and energy-efficient thermal environment in occupied zones.…”

“…Instead, environmental sensors (e.g., illuminance, thermostats, occupancy, and CO 2 ) are designed to control lighting, heating, ventilation, and cooling systems. As a result, occupants are limited to adjusting what they can control, for example, their clothing [1], or can raise complaints [2]. Noise and its effect on productivity and mental health is also a significant issue in the built environment [3,4].…”
