Communication through Boundary Objects in Distributed Agile Teams

Abstract: Personal communication between User-Centered Design (UCD) specialists and developers is important for communicating user needs and design solutions in agile development. In distributed projects where opportunities for personal communication are limited, the design documentation is an important surrogate. This study has investigated the perceived effectiveness of boundary objects in a distributed agile team, and their role in communicating target user needs. Six in-depth interviews with UCD specialists showed t… Show more

“…For instance, Pareto et al examined architectural descriptions as boundary objects in agile systems engineering and specified requirements for their creation . Another study focused on boundary objects in distributed agile user‐centered design, concluding that boundary objects are facilitators for communication in that domain. The production process was in the focus of another study, analyzing how engineers, assemblers, and technicians communicate across boundaries .…”

“…Additionally, we could realize that authors use different nomenclature for artifacts that are used for the same purpose. For example, the term guideline [64] [65] was also used as style guide [49], and design specification [60]. To handle these different names, we grouped the artifacts according to their objectives.…”

“…Working with Scrum teams particularly in large corporations, Budwig et al [93] detail the practices of user experience teams. Blomkvist et al [113] analyse one-to-one communication among UCD specialists believed to be a major factor for identifying users needs and design solutions in agile development.…”
