Community Characteristics and Genetic Diversity of Macrobenthos in Haima Cold Seep

Abstract: Knowledge about community structure and genetic diversity can help assess the potential for change in the loss and restoration of biodiversity, thereby facilitating effective management and ecosystem protection. Macroinvertebrate communities are an important biotic component of deep sea cold seep ecosystems. As Haima cold seep is increasingly being assessed for its potential gas hydrate mineral wealth, knowledge of community characteristics and genetic diversity of macrobenthos is needed to anticipate the pote… Show more

“…Studies have also been conducted to unveil the genetic divergence and connectivity of seep macrofauna within the SCS (Yao et al 2022), and between the SCS and nearby vent and seep ecosystems in Northwest Pacific (Shen et al 2016;Yang et al 2016;Xu et al 2017Xu et al , 2018Xu et al , 2019Xu et al , 2021Xiao et al 2020). These species have different life-history characteristics that may determine their dispersal routes (i.e., via bottom, mid-water or surface currents), dispersal distances, and genetic differentiation.…”

“…Cold seeps constitute a fragmented, more or less stable, reduced habitat along active and passive continental margins associated with gas/hydrocarbon or brine resurgence zones in all oceans (Hecker, 1985;Sibuet et al, 1988;MacDonald et al, 1989;Jollivet et al, 1990;Olu et al, 1997;Olu-Le Roy et al, 2004;Yao et al, 2022). These sites are distributed over a wide range of depths from a few hundred to more than 7300 meters (Fujikura et al, 1999), and are often separated by large geographic distances.…”
