“…A geographical downscaling of activity patterns contrasts with previous findings from another Danish metropolitan region covering urban form correlates of commuting distances (Grunfelder & Nielsen, 2012) as well as studies of regional enlargement on the island of Zealand (Nielsen & Hovgesen, 2005). In past studies, the significant destination accessibility correlates were seen to climb upwards in the urban hierarchy over time, leaving the smaller centers less significant for commuting patterns.…”

“…The authors interpreted the finding as being the result of the development of the urban region towards a decentralized form at a larger scale than previously, including a general imbalance of jobs and housing in the growing suburban sub-centers. Grunfelder and Nielsen (2012) studied commuting time, distance and modes between 1993 and 2003. The urban form correlates of commuting distances were found to change over time, thereby reducing the importance of distance to smaller urban centers in the region, and thus increasing the relative importance of distance to one of the 7 largest centers in the region for commuting patterns.…”

“…Overall, recent studies have shown that it is difficult to draw a universal conclusion between urban density and commute time (Levinson and Kumar 1997;Schwanen et al 2004;Antipova et al 2011;Grunfelder and Nielsen 2012).…”

“…Some of the studies of polycentric urban areas have found effects on commuting distances, energy use and travel mode mainly from neighborhood densities (Hickman & Banister, 2015;Grunfelder & Nielsen, 2012). However, there is still lack of knowledge of how residential location influences travel behavior in polycentric urban areas, compared to more monocentric urban areas.…”
