Show more

“…All the esmeralderos ( guaqueros , carvers, and traders) I spoke with agreed that encounters between people and emeralds always happen thanks to something unpredictable beyond measures and design. As I have shown elsewhere (Caraballo Acuña 2022), artisanal miners say they don't find emeralds, but emeralds se les aparecen (appear to them); the apparition of an emerald does not depend on cause‐and‐effect linearity but on an indeterminate occurrence. Similarly, while the stone is being carved, previously unsuspected qualities always appear: a surprising shade of green, a hole or inclusion that had not been seen, a tremendous optical effect that suddenly appears.…”

“…Specifically, it asked for two relations: the average amount of emeralds they usually find in artisanal mining, and the average amount of money they used to get for their sales. Vicente told me the following: “ Aquí no hay nada ‘usual’; aquí no ‘solemos’ hacer nada; aquí todo es impredecible [there is nothing usual here; here we don't usually do anything; everything is unpredictable here].” As I have shown elsewhere (Caraballo Acuña 2022; see also Suárez Guava 2021), this is because finding emeralds in an artisanal way is an indeterminate combination of technique, luck, and the will of God and the emeralds. It is also impossible to know how much money you will be able to get for one (although there might be a predictable but broad range).…”
