Compact broadband modified triangular microstrip antennas

Abstract: Slot cut compact shorted 60° sectoral microstrip antenna and its complementary configuration are proposed. The slot optimises the spacing between higher order TM1/4,1 and fundamental TM1/4,0 modes to yield broadband response. On air substrate of thickness 0.105λ0, shorted 60° sectoral patch antenna yields a bandwidth (BW) (VSWR ≤ 2) of more than 600 MHz (821–1428 MHz, ∼54%), whereas its complementary configuration yields BW of more than 480 MHz (655–1142 MHz, >50%). The proposed antennas show a broadside radia… Show more

“…Here first resonant peak (784 MHz) is due to shorted TM 11 mode. This mode is also referred to as TM 1/4,0 mode as current shows quarter wavelength variation along shorted patch length [15,17]. In shorted 90° S-MSA, an additional resonant mode is observed at frequency of 1702 MHz when the proximity feed is placed at an offset position 'B' as shown in Figs.…”

“…However, this slot length approximation does not give close result since the effects of other parameters like slot width, its position, feed point location with respect to slot and the substrate thickness were not considered. Recently, a detailed study explaining the effect of rectangular slot in broadband shorted sectoral MSA (S-MSA) is reported [15]. It showed that slot tunes the spacing between shorted patch higher order and fundamental mode resonance frequency that gives wider BW [15].…”

“…[1][2][3] However, this approach has disadvantages, including increased manufacturing costs and complexity. Thus, some previous studies have focused on minimizing the antenna size by using lumped elements, 4 metamaterial substrates, 5,6 and slots in antenna radiators 7 to increase the physical separation distance between the array elements for isolation improvement. However, such studies require additional design parameters and lack an intensive consideration of mutual coupling caused by leakage fields from antenna elements in a very small array.…”
