Compact Focusing Grating Couplers for Silicon-on-Insulator Integrated Circuits

Abstract: Abstract-We report experimental results on compact and broadband focusing grating couplers, both in silicon-on-insulator (SOI) and gold on SOI. An eight-fold length reduction of the coupling structure from fiber to photonic wire in SOI, as compared to a linear grating and adiabatic taper, is obtained, without performance penalty. A proof of principle is given for a focusing grating coupler in gold on SOI, with 20% fiber-to-focus efficiency.

“…The need for an adiabatic taper is to prevent coupling between the fundamental mode and the higher order modes. Compact curved grating couplers [7] designed for the C-band operation, are added to couple light in and out of the device. Depending on the arm, a coupler for either the TE or the TM polarization is used.…”

“…To use the tilted 1D GC for coupling light between a wire waveguide (with a width of 450 nm) and a single-mode fiber in free space, a long taper is normally needed between the waveguide and the GC. An FGC design can be used to dramatically reduce the length of this taper [9]. The curves of an FGC are described in a polar coordinate system as [3] r(q, α)…”

“…Coupling from the outside world to the chip and back is achieved by focusing grating couplers [6], [7] that have a coupling efficiency of about 30% in our case. This efficiency can, in principle, be improved to values beyond 80% [9].…”
