Compact system for high-speed velocimetry using heterodyne techniques

Abstract: We have built a high-speed velocimeter that has proven to be compact, simple to operate, and fairly inexpensive. This diagnostic is assembled using off-the-shelf components developed for the telecommunications industry. The main components are fiber lasers, high-bandwidth high-sample-rate digitizers, and fiber optic circulators. The laser is a 2W cw fiber laser operating at 1550nm. The digitizers have 8GHz bandwidth and can digitize four channels simultaneously at 20GS∕s. The maximum velocity of this system is… Show more

“…An obvious result of this calculation is that the signal fringes get closer together as ramp velocity increases, i.e. the beat frequency is proportional to velocity (as expected [2]). Closer inspection reveals that the signal baseline vertically "hops" away from the zero at the onset of motion.…”

“…orders@ntis.fedworld.gov Online ordering: http://www.ntis.gov/help/ordermethods.asp?loc=7-4-0#online This report describes the fringen program, which performs forward VISAR (Velocity Interferometer System for Any Reflector [1]) and PDV (Photonic Doppler Velocimetry, also known as heterodyne velocimetry [2]) analysis. Nearly all effects that might occur in VISAR/PDV measurement of a single velocity can be modeled by fringen.…”

“…27 In the present research, the shock pressure induced by glass-confined LSP is measured with a newly developed photonic Doppler velocimetry (PDV). [27][28][29] Compared with water-confined LSP, glass-confinement generates much higher pressure which can be easily reproduced. Since its invention, the use of PDV has been rapidly spreading as a powerful diagnostic method for tracking velocity on the short time scales in shock-wave experiments 29 and other related areas.…”

“…Photon Doppler Velocimetry (PDV) was used to obtain velocimetry information over a spot size of approximately 0.5 mm. This technique is described elsewhere [16]. Experimental parameters are listed in Table I.…”
