The aim of this study was to examine environmental and gene-environment processes linking parenting (i.e., affect, control, responsiveness) and preschool children's behavioral adjustment difficulties (e.g., noncompliance, conduct problems) by using bivariate genetic analyses of parents' and observers' ratings. The sample included 120 identical and same-sex fraternal twin pairs (M age = 43 months). Data sources included in-home observations, interviews, and parents' reports. Observers' ratings of children's difficult behaviors included shared and nonshared environmental variance. In contrast, parents' ratings of children's conduct problems showed genetic and nonshared environmental variance. Observer-rated maternal behavior included shared and nonshared environmental variance, although maternal responsiveness also included child genetic variance. Parent self-reported negative and positive affect included shared and nonshared environment as well as child genetic variance. There was no evidence for gene-environment interaction or dominance. Higher levels of difficult behavior and conduct problems covaried with higher levels of maternal negative affect and control and lower levels of maternal positive affect and control. Shared environmental mediation of these correlations was found for observations, whereas genetic and nonshared environmental mediation was found for parents' ratings. In general, estimates of shared environmental variance and mediation were greatest for observational data, and estimates of child genetic variance and mediation were greatest for parent-rated data. The implications of this pattern of findings for genetic research on family processes are discussed.

Despite important clinical and nosological implications, the comorbidity of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) has received little attention. A clinicbased sample of 243 boys (ages 6-10 years), their parents, and teachers participated in an evaluation that involved assessments of behavioral, academic, and family functioning. ODD and GAD symptom groups were defined using various combinations of mother and teacher reports. ODD symptom groups were associated with conduct disorder symptoms, and GAD symptom groups with major depressive disorder symptoms, regardless of rater. Attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms were associated with ODD and GAD symptom groups; however, covarying ADHD symptoms altered few findings. The ODD+GAD symptom groups were associated with higher rates of co-occurring symptoms and risk factors within (sourcespecific syndromes) and across (cross-informant comorbidity) informants.Although comorbidity is more the rule than the exception among child emotional and behavioral disorders (Angold, Costello, & Erkanli, 1999;Lilienfeld, 2003), the cooccurrence of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) has received relatively little attention in spite of the fact that ODD likely alters the course, correlates, and treatment response for children with GAD (Flannery-Schroeder, Suveg, Safford, Kendall, & Webb, 2004;Garland & Garland, 2001;Kendall, Panichelli-Mindel, Sugarman, & Callahan, 1997). For instance, oppositional behavior in the context of an anxiety disorder may lead to reluctance to engage in exposures and comply with treatment. In addition, parents of children with anxiety disorders report that their children's oppositional behavior is particularly difficult to manage (Garland & Garland, 2001). Unfortunately, research to date generally has examined overanxious disorder, which was replaced by GAD in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed.[DSM-IV]; American Psychiatric Association, 1994), and/or has combined multiple anxiety or disruptive behavior disorders (for reviews, see Angold et al., 1999;Russo & Beidel, 1994), which obscures specific relations between ODD and GAD. a b s t r a c tThis study documented the consistency of child engagement across two settings, toddler child care classrooms and mother-child dyadic play. One hundred twelve children, aged 14-36 months (M = 25.17, SD = 6.06), randomly selected from 30 toddler child care classrooms from the district of Porto, Portugal, participated. Levels of engagement were coded, and sophisticated engagement, but not nonengagement, was consistent across settings. Consistency in children's sophisticated engagement was primarily accounted for by chronological age. Children spent more time in sophisticated behaviors and less time nonengaged during mother-child dyadic play than in center-based child care. For sophisticated engagement, effects of child predictors were stronger than effects of environmental features; whereas for nonengagement, effects of environmental features were stronger than effects of child predictors. Findings suggest children's sophisticated engagement may be generalizable across settings, as a function of age, whereas their nonengagement is most likely context dependent.
