Comparability of off the shelf foot orthoses in the redistribution of forces in midfoot osteoarthritis patients

Abstract: HighlightsBoth types of functional foot orthoses produce similar mechanical effects compared to the sham orthosis. The sham orthosis was comparable to the shoe only condition. Both functional foot orthoses and the sham orthoses are appropriate for use in future RCTs.

“…Of the 125 patients included in the study, there was a predominance of males versus females (54.4% vs. 45.6%), with a mean age of 46.0 ± 19.2 years. The body mass index was 28.0 ± 6.2 kg/m 2 , with a median of 27 and a range of 13 Regarding the reason for consultation, the most frequent was hindfoot pain (58.2%) followed by forefoot pain (41.8%). Regarding the diagnosis, the most frequent was plantar fasciitis (29.7%), followed by metatarsalgia (18.6%).…”

“…For example, degeneration of the knee joint, which constitutes a pathological link in the kinematic chain, results in the development of similar changes in the hips, spine, and feet. Functional disorders linked to the structural and morphological changes within the lower limbs contribute to impaired joint mobility, pain syndromes, axial deformity of the joints, and, thereby, changes in the gait pattern coupled with its limited efficiency [ 18 ].…”

“…Each patient signed an agreement to participate in the study. The sample number of 80 was chosen because it was similar to related insole experiments [1823]. Furthermore, our criteria ensured that errors would be minimized for relatively small sample sizes.…”
