Comparative analysis of R2R3‐MYB transcription factors in the flower of Iris laevigata identifies a novel gene regulating tobacco cold tolerance

Abstract: Breeding for flower cold resistance is a priority for flower breeding research in northern China. The identification of cold resistance genes will not only provide genetic resources for cold resistance breeding, but also form a basis for the study of plant cold resistance mechanisms.• Based on the flower transcriptome of Iris laevigata, 20 R2R3-MYBs were identified and comprehensive analysis, including conservative domain, phylogenetic analyses and functional distribution, were performed for R2R3-MYBs. “…For example, MdMYB88/124 can stimulate MdCA1 and MdCOR47 through signal transduction pathways upon receiving low-temperature signals, and MdCBF1/MdCBF3 and other related genes were highly expressed [ 23 ]. Low temperatures can induce the expression of the IlMYB306 gene in Iris laevigata , and the content and activity of various physiologically active substances in tobacco overexpressing IlMYB306 undergo significant changes after low-temperature stress, such as a decrease in chlorophyll content, an increase in free proline content, and a significant increase in activities such as MDA, SOD, and POD [ 24 ].…”

“…To stagger the flowering time and prolong the flowering period, it is necessary to find genes that can advance or delay the flowering. I. laevigata is also sensitive to abiotic stress [27]. Thus, extending the flowering period and increasing the resistance to salt and drought stress are two central goals in the field of breeding I. laevigata of novel properties [28,29].…”

“…The large, bright, and elegant flowers, along with tall, verdant, and straight leaves, make I. laevigata of high ornamental values. In addition, I. laevigata is strongly tolerant of cold [ 2 ]. Thus, I. laevigata is an ideal gardening plant in the northeast region of China with high commercial value.…”

“…In addition, the identity and function of MADS-box genes in I. laevigata have not been reported. To overcome the unavailability of genome data, our group recently performed RNA-sequencing using the flower tissue of I. laevigata [ 2 ]. The valuable resource made it possible to screen 23 R2R3-MYBs genes that are involved in cold-resistance in I. laevigata [ 2 ].…”
