Comparative Analysis of the Dorsal Chaetotaxy of Troglopedetes, Trogolaphysa, and Campylothorax Supports the Synonymization of Tribes Paronellini and Troglopedetini (Collembola: Paronellidae)

Abstract: Genera in subfamily Paronellinae have been grouped into five tribes, in part based on chaetotaxy. Tribes Bromacanthini, Paronellini, and Troglopedetini are characterized by having rounded scales and reduced or no macrochaetae, and although Bromacanthini harbors two well-differentiated genera, the core genera in tribes Paronellini and Troglopedetini form a homogeneous group where even generic diagnoses were, until recently, unclear. The genera assigned to Troglopedetini ( Troglopedetes Absolon, Trogolaphysa Mil… Show more

“…The short mucro and presence of only two trichobothria on Abd. IV exclude doveri from Cyphoderopsis Carpenter, 1917or Trogolaphysa Mills, 1938 as well (Thibaud & Najt 1988;Jantarit et al 2013;Soto-Adames et al 2014). Conversely, it matches the most recent definition of the genus Lepidonella Yosii, 1960 (Deharveng & Bedos 1995;Soto-Adames & Bellini 2015;Bellini & Cipola 2017), except for its reduced eye number, a well-known adaptive character among cave-obligate species.…”

“…For dorsal chaetotaxy, we rely (but see below) on the nomenclatures of Szeptycki (1979), Mitra (1993) and Soto-Adames & Bellini (2015). We used most characters listed in Soto-Adames et al (2014), with some additional ones. The formula of dorsal macrochaetae and trichobothria are given by half-tergite from head to Abd.…”

“…The overall morphology was described based on specimens of the entire type series. The dorsal chaetotaxy schemes follow Szeptycki (1979), Mitra & Dalai (1980), Mari Mutt (1987), Soto-aDaMeS et al (2014) and Soto-aDaMeS (2016); trunk specialized chaetae (S-chaetae) follow zhang & Deharveng (2015); labial chaetotaxy follows giSin (1964) and labial papilla follows FjellBerg (1999 (Fig. 1).…”

“…On abdomen IV, 11 chaetae (T6, D3, D3p, E3, E4, E4p, E4p2, F2, F3, Fe3, and Fe4) plus the posterior bothriotricum were also misinterpreted between series 'T' to . In fact, this last bothriotricum was given 3 different names in revisions of Entomobryoidea (see Szeptycki 1979;Soto-Adames 2008;Jantarit et al 2014;Soto-Adames et al 2014). Observations on 1st and 2nd instars of Cyphoderus (see Szeptycki 1979: 214, Figs.…”
