Comparative Carbohydrate Catabolism in Arthrobacter

Abstract: SUMMARYThe catabolic pathways for the utilization of glucose and gluconate in one representation of each of five species of Arthrobacter were studied by the respirometric method ). The results indicate that these Arthrobacter organisms can be classified into two groups on the basis of their catabolic behaviour. The first group (Arthrobacter ureafaciens, A . globiformis) relies primarily on the operation of the Embden-MeyerhofParnas pathway and, to some extent, the hexose monophosphate pathway for the assimilat… Show more

“…In Arthrobacter P1 the levels of 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and other enzymes of the pentose phosphate pathway were enhanced in gluconate-grown cells as compared to glucose-grown cells, while no activity of the xylulose-5-phosphate cleavage enzyme phosphoketolase was found (Table2). This indicates that the metabolism of gluconate in Arthrobacter P1 is by way of the pentose phosphate pathway and, subsequently, the Embden-Meyerhof route, as reported for Arthrobacter globiformis and Arthrobacter ureafaciens [12]. It is therefore concluded that in Arthrobacter P1 cleavage of hexose phosphates into C 3 compounds only occurs via the Embden-Meyerhof route (Fig.…”

“…The tendency in the past few years has been to assign species to the genus Arthrobacter mainly on the basis of morphology, often despite distinct differences in nutritional requirements (Zagallo and Wang, 1962). This practice is understandable in view of the fact that all too often it is difficult to obtain significant physiological response from these organisms.…”

“…Though the reasons for the temporary fall in metabolic activities during morphogenesis remain to be investigated, changes in glucose assimilation pathways (Zagallo and Wang 1962;Krulwich and Ensign 1969), variations in cell wall structure (Krulwich et al 1967a(Krulwich et al , 1967b, or a combination of these factors might be the major events involved in the phenomena observed. …”
