Comparative Chemistry of Propolis from Eight Brazilian Localities

Abstract: Propolis is a complex honeybee product with resinous aspect, containing plant exudates and beeswax. Their color, texture, and chemical composition vary, depending on the location of the hives and local flora. The most studied Brazilian propolis is the green (alecrim-do-campo) type, which contains mainly prenylated phenylpropanoids and caffeoylquinic acids. Other types of propolis are produced in Brazil, some with red color, others brown, grey, or black. The aim of the present work was to determine the chemical… Show more

“…The total phenolic content in the ethanol extracts of Ethiopian propolis samples were different according to the floral origin of the region. This holds true for propolis samples obtained from different regions in Brazil depending on the location of the hives and local floral sources [33]. Table 5.…”

“…caffeic acid band. Classically, propolis from tempered zone is rich in flavonoids and aromatic acids while propolis from tropical zone is rich in phenolic compounds [44]. Nonetheless, the propolis samples fulfil ANVISA's requirement to be considered as effective extracts, both presented amounts of flavonoids higher than 0.25% w/w [37].…”
