Comparative Effectiveness Research in Oncology

Abstract: Although randomized controlled trials represent the gold standard for comparative effective research (CER), a number of additional methods are available when randomized controlled trials are lacking or inconclusive because of the limitations of such trials. In addition to more relevant, efficient, and generalizable trials, there is a need for additional approaches utilizing rigorous methodology while fully recognizing their inherent limitations. CER is an important construct for defining and summarizing eviden… Show more

“…11,12 Given the complex nature and current poor performance of the US health care system, individual oncologists and their professional societies need to take an active major role in establishing a broad definition of value in oncology that can be used to guide value-based policies, and it must be one that can be understood by a range of stakeholders. 13 Four parameters should be incorporated into the definition of value: survival, quality of care, cost, and equity. 2,3,14 Survival is the most universally accepted and straightforward metric in cancer care.…”

“…Although the literature of health services research contains detailed resources to guide the design and interpretation of such studies, 12345678910111213 and some reviews have considered specific topics of interest to the radiation oncologist, 141516171819 we are aware of no single, comprehensive overview specifically targeted towards the radiation oncologist who seeks to conduct or interpret such studies. Because observational research has unique features that distinguish it from clinical trials and other forms of traditional radiation oncology research, the Red Journal assembled a panel of experts in health services research to provide a concise and well-referenced overview, intended to be informative for the lay reader of the Red Journal, as well as for scholars who wish to embark on such research without prior experience.…”
