Comparative Evaluation of Bactericidal Potential of Four Root Canal Filling Materials against Microflora of Infected Non -Vital Primary Teeth

Abstract: Background and objectives: Since complete debridement of the root canals of the primary teeth is not practically possible due to the highly variable root canal anatomy, success of the endodontic therapy depends partly on the use of antibacterial irrigating agents and root canal filling materials. Recent literature indicates that anaerobes comprise a majority of the bacteria in necrotic root canals of primary teeth. The study determined the antibacterial effectiveness of four root canal filling materials namely… Show more

“…On the other hand, we compared the antibacterial properties of bioceramic sealers with zinc oxide eugenol cement, in the Sealite group, Candida Albicans count has significantly decreased between day 3 and day 14 (P<0.05) in comparison with the other groups. In fact in a comparative study of Harni Priya et al showed that zinc oxide eugenol had a maximum antifungal activity on Candida Albicans [27], this finding is also in concordance with the comparative study of Saha et al where a zinc oxide eugenol-based sealer showed maximum zone of inhibition affirming the highest antimicrobial activity on Candida Albicans [28]. These results are probably due to the composition and biophysical characteristics of the sealer [19,25,26,27].…”

“…The bacterial leakage test model of Sisodia R et al indicated that Zinc Oxide Eugenol showed no bacterial leakage and better resistance to bacterial leakage than Apexit plus (a calcium hydroxide based root canal sealer paste) [ 22 ]. ZOE showed better inhibitory activity against most of the organisms isolated than Vitapex, Calcium hydroxide and Metapex, which proved by Harini PM et al [ 23 ]. These characteristics may be the cause of good clinical manifestations of ZOE, and was also the reason why the present study chooses the ZOE as the main component of the mixed paste.…”

“…This incomplete bacterial eradication usually occurs because of the presence of accessory canals and other anatomical variations (4) . Therefore, the use of disinfectant agents or systems that poses antibacterial activity was strongly recommended as an effective method that could help the mechanical instrumentation in bacterial eradication (2,5) . Although, the efficacy of these antibacterial agents has controversial results as well as they could have some adverse effects (6) .…”
