Comparative Evaluation of Selected Biological Methods for the Removal of Hydrophilic and Hydrophobic Odorous VOCs from Air

Abstract: Due to increasingly stringent legal regulations as well as increasing social awareness, the removal of odorous volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from air is gaining importance. This paper presents the strategy to compare selected biological methods intended for the removal of different air pollutants, especially of odorous character. Biofiltration, biotrickling filtration and bioscrubbing technologies are evaluated in terms of their suitability for the effective removal of either hydrophilic or hydrophobic VOC… Show more

“…Among various treatment methods for air deodorization (e.g. absorption, adsorption, thermal oxidation), biological processes, including biofiltration, are favored due to high efficiency, low operational costs and minute secondary pollution (McNevin and Barford 2000;Mudliar et al 2010;Gospodarek et al 2019). Biotrickling filtration (BTF) is a specific mode of biofiltration, combining the features of biofilters and bioscrubbers in one apparatus.…”

“…In other words, division lines are always perpendicular to the division axis in variable space. The use of decision trees for the evaluation of processes such as biofiltration, wastewater treatment, or the analysis of data obtained from the electronic nose, has already been used, among others, in the works [29][30][31]. All calculations were performed in RStudio 1.1.463 using the 'rpart' library.…”

“…Most models describing this process are applicable only to pollutants highly soluble in water at low concentrations levels [3]. Descending removal efficiency of some groups of organic pollutants consecutively: alcohols > esters > ketones > aromatic hydrocarbons > aliphatic hydrocarbons, correlates directly with Henry's constant, which shows that the lower the ratio of pollutants solubility in water, the less likely the possibility of their biodegradation in the biofilter bed [4,5]. Therefore, not only the pre-purification of gases transported into the filter bed is examined, but also a change in the parameters of the purification process and modification of the filter bed to improve its sorption and degradation qualities (e.g.…”
