Comparative proteomic approach to identify proteins involved in flooding combined with salinity stress in soybean

Abstract: Salinity together with waterlogging or flooding, a condition that occurs frequently in the field, can cause severe damage to crops. Combined flooding and salinity decreases the growth and survival of plants more than either stress alone. We report here the first proteomic analysis to investigate the global effects of saline flooding on multiple metabolic pathways. Soybean seedlings at the emergence (VE) stage were treated with 100 mM NaCl and flooded with water or 100 mM sodium chloride solution for 2 days. Pr… Show more

“…High soil salinity reduces soil water potential, inhibiting plant water absorption (12). High Na + uptake in salt‐exposed plants interferes with K + uptake, enzyme activities, and metabolic processes (2,3). Therefore, reduced turfgrass quality and sub‐par playing conditions are common problems associated with salt‐affected turfgrass areas (12).…”

“…Alcohol dehydrogenase (>3‐fold, P < 0.01) was upregulated in ZhongmuNo.3 in this study, suggesting that the production of ATP and elimination of glycolytic products are effective strategies to acclimate the anaerobic conditions created by a saline environment in the tolerant genotype under salt stress. This result is inconsistent with the role of alcohol dehydrogenase in crop tolerance to flooding …”
