Comparative study between using Lowenstein Jensen, Bio-FM media and mycobacteria growth indicator tube (MGIT) system in identification of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

Abstract: Background/aim: Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be one of the most important infectious diseases threatening the human health. Culture systems are used for isolation of tuberculous bacilli as they are more sensitive than smear microscopy. The aim of the work was to evaluate the detection rate and time of Mycobacterium tuberculosis by using the Bio FM system and mycobacteria growth indicator tube (MGIT) system in comparison with the Lowenstein-Jensen medium. Methods: This study was carried out on a total 60 smear… Show more

“…However, culture on it is long (3 weeks to 3 months for M. tuberculosis) and time-consuming. MGIT was better than LJ medium in recovery rate and detection time of mycobacterial growth [20]. Due to its sensitivity, MGIT should be used for smear-negative pulmonary TB patients [21].…”

“…During bacterial growth within the tube, the free oxygen is used and is replaced with carbon dioxide. The decrease of free oxygen made the fluorochrome was no longer inhibited and produces a fluorescence within the MGIT tube when visualized under UV light [20].…”

“…LJ medium includes very high concentrations of malachite green which helps to prevent contamination with other species of bacteria. Mycobacterium Growth Indicator Tube was better media as compared to LJ medium in retrieval rate of Mycobacterial growth [24] . MGIT should be used mostly for assessing antituberculosis effect of different agents.…”

“…The decrease of free oxygen produces a fluorescence within the MGIT tube when visualized under UV light. 19 MGIT is now considered to be the standard method and is widely used. The mean time for MTB detection is 12.9 days with BACTECMGIT 960 and 15 days with BACTEC 460.…”
