Comparative Study of Fibrillar Collagen Arrangement in the Corneas of Primates and Other Mammals

Abstract: This study is a comparative study of the relationship between corneal structure, morphology, and function in a range of mammalian species. Xray scattering patterns were gathered at regular spatial intervals over the excised cornea (and in most cases also the scleral rim) of humans, marmosets, horses, cows, pigs, rabbits, and mice. All patterns were analyzed to produce quantitative information regarding the predominant orientation of fibrillar collagen throughout the tissue. The predominant direction of corneal… Show more

“…The lamellar architecture of the bovine cornea is not constant across the centre superior -inferior strip [32], and can possibly vary slightly from one cornea to the other. It is also likely that sample preparation and loading into the bioreactor slightly affected the lamellae architecture of the cornea.…”

“…Examples include the fact that the blink rate in both mice and rabbits is lower than that in humans; 182,183 humans also have a much higher concentration of lysozyme in their tears. 184 Rabbits possess a nictitating membrane, and the structure of a human cornea is different in several ways to that of mice and rabbits: Bowman's layer and Descemet's membrane are thicker, 185 the orientation of the collagen is different 186 and the depth of each of the layers varies depending on species. 187 On a molecular level, examples of species differences include the fact that mice are known to use several NAIP accessory proteins to activate the NLRP4 inflammasome, whereas in humans only one type of NAIP has been found.…”

“…In previous studies, pigs, mice, rats, and rabbits have been used as animal models to produce AK (Vasseneix et al, 2006;Ren et al, 2010;Kim et al, 2014;Kemp et al, 2014). Rabbits are preferred as keratitis models because the rabbit cornea is more similar to the human cornea (Zhou et al, 2014;Karn et al, 2014;Hayes et al, 2007).…”
