Comparative study of rosmarinic acid content in some plants of Labiatae family

Abstract: Background:Plants of Labiatae are used in traditional medicine and phytotherapy. Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a phenolic compound which is found in many genus of Labiatae and exhibits important biological activities.Materials and Methods:In this investigation, RA contents of 29 species of Labiatae named Salvia officinalis, Salvia limbata, Salvia virgata, Salvia hypoleuca, Salvia macrosiphon, Salvia choloroleuca, Melissa officinalis, Origanum vulgare, Lavandula angustifolia, Rosmarinus officinalis, Thymus daenensis,… Show more

“…Reference solutions of rosmarinic acid (major constituent in the plant (Shekarchi, Hajimehdipoor, Saeidnia, Gohari, & Hamedani, 2012)) were prepared by dissolving accurately weight of rosmarinic acid in methanol (10, 30, 60, 100, and 120 ng/µl). The correlations of peak area of standard rosmarinic acid versus concentrations (as ng/ µl) were plotted and the calibration curve showed linearity over the studied concentration range with regression coefficient (r 2 ) 0.995.…”

“…Rosmarinic acid (RA) is a polyphenol antioxidant carboxylic acid existed in many Lamiaceae herbs used commonly as culinary herbs, such as lemon balm ( Melissa officinalis ), rosemary ( Rosmarinus officinalis ), oregano ( Origanum vulgare ), sage ( Salvia officinalis ), thyme and peppermint [167,168]. RA possesses many biological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antiviral, antibacterial, and neuroprotective effects [169,170].…”
