Comparative Study of the Effects of 2% Ibopamine, 10% Phenylephrine, and 1% Tropicamide on the Anterior Segment

Abstract: The results confirm the potent mydriatic effect of 2% ibopamine, which is greater than that of either 10% phenylephrine or 1% tropicamide, as well as its ability to induce an increase in intraocular pressure when used in patients with glaucoma alone. These data support the hypothesis that the widening of the ACA induced by 2% ibopamine is due to posterior rotation of the iris plane and ciliary processes. These changes are quantitatively greater than those induced by 10% phenylephrine and 1% tropicamide and are… Show more

“…Additionally, the noncycloplegic and large mydriasis (5) allows comfortable fundus examination. We are now suggesting a new application for the ibopamine test by correlating IOP after the test with the highest IOP in the diurnal tension curve.…”

“…Epinine binds to α-adrenergic and D-1 dopaminergic receptors. The adrenergic binding causes a non-cycloplegic mydriasis, greater than 10% phenylephrine and 1% tropicamide (5) , while the D-1 dopaminergic action causes an increase in aqueous humor production (6)(7) . Because glaucoma patients may have an impaired outflow system, a provocative test has been proposed based on the theory…”

“…O efeito midriático da ibopamina 2% supera, em termos de medida da dilatação pupilar, aquele produzido pela tropicamida 1% e pela fenilefrina 10% (15) . Ao contrário da tropicamida e da fenilefrina, que produzem uma redução significativa da sensibilidade à realização da perimetria visual computadorizada (16)(17)(18) , a ibopamina não altera a refração nem a acuidade visual do paciente (8,19) .…”

The adrenergic binding causes a non-cycloplegic mydriasis, while the D-1 dopaminergic action causes an increase in aqueous humor production (4)(5)(6)(7)(8) . Because it increases aqueous humour production, ibopamine eyedrops have been successfully used to treat post-trabeculectomy hypotony (9)(10) .…”
