Comparative Study on the Effectiveness of Antifungal Agents in Different Regimens against Vaginal Candidiasis

Abstract: Objective: A study was carried out to compare three treatment regimens for vaginal candidiasis. Methods: A total of 150 women with clinical and mycological evidence of vaginal candidiasis were randomized to receive daily a 200-mg dose of oral itraconazole for 3 days (50 women), a single oral 150 mg dose of fluconazole (50 women), or daily 100 mg dose of intravaginal clotrimazole for 6 days (50 women). They were assessed at 5–15 days (short-term assessment) and again at 30–60 days (long-term assessment) after d… Show more

“…The prevalence of C. albicans as a pathogen in this study is consistent with findings in the literature [1,3,4,12]; but there is also an increasing trend of non-albicans species as a cause of fungal infection [6,11,13]. Among these species, C. glabrate, C. tropicalis and C. parapsilosis appear to be commonly detected [1,3,4,[12][13][14].…”

“…13 The Clinical cure rate was significantly high in the itraconazole group compared to the fluconazole group. Results of these studies are similar to our study results.…”

“…Forms of infectious vaginitis sustained by mixed micro-organisms are also observed frequently [6] . Vaginal infections can be successfully treated by using one or more pathogen-specific antimicrobials [1,3,[7][8][9] , but, before vaginitis is treated, the cause must be ascertained by using appropriate laboratory tests [1,2,6,7,10] . Because some strains of Candida albicans resistant to topical azole antifungals [3,11] and strains of Trichomonas vaginalis resistant to treatment with metronidazole and tinidazole [12][13][14] have been recently isolated, it is also necessary to verify the susceptibility of micro-organisms to the recommended antimicrobials in certain cases [3] .…”
