Comparison between bimatoprost and latanoprost-timolol fixed combination for efficacy and safety after switching patients from latanoprost

Abstract: BackgroundThe purpose of this study was to prospectively evaluate and compare intraocular pressure (IOP) reduction efficacy and safety between bimatoprost and latanoprost-timolol fixed combination (LTFC) in Japanese patients with open-angle glaucoma.MethodsIn this prospective, randomized, non-masked study, after enrolling 70 eyes of 70 Japanese open-angle glaucoma patients who had used latanoprost monotherapy for more than 4 weeks, the subjects were randomly divided into a bimatoprost group or an LTFC group. “…In this study, no significant differences were found between Lat and Taf in regard to IOP reduction effects, conjunctival hyperemia score, and corneal epitheliopathy score, as well as eyelash change and eyelid and iris pigmentation. It has been reported that conjunctival hyperemia becomes stronger when switching from Lat to travoprost or bimatoprost, 14 , 15 and the same tendency was found to be true in this present study when switching from Lat to Taf. Although there were no statistically significant differences, elongation of eyelash length was more frequently found in Lat, whereas increased eyelash amount was more frequently found in Taf.…”

“…This observation was consistent with previous studies [ 11 , 12 , 24 - 26 ] showing that bimatoprost has a greater potential for IOP reduction than latanoprost. Sato et al reported that patients with NTG whose response to latanoprost was insufficient showed a further significant IOP reduction by switching from latanoprost to bimatoprost [ 27 ].…”

“…In common with the paper by Maruyama et al that compared BTFC with latanoprost plus timolol FC, 21 we noted a slightly higher proportion of patients showing conjunctival hyperemia with BTFC (18.6% vs 10.3%). A slightly higher proportion of patients showed superficial keratitis with DTFC (9.3% vs 5.1%).…”

“…14,15 These findings have been corroborated by two recent meta-analyses reporting that prostaglandin plus timolol FCs lead to a significantly lower incidence of ocular hyperemia than monotherapy with their respective prostaglandins. 21,28 In our work, the overall proportion of patients with treatment related adverse event was 19.6% and 23.7% with DTFC and BTFC respectively.…”
