Comparison between Parametric and Semi-parametric Cox Models in Modeling Transition Rates of a Multi-state Model: Application in Patients with Gastric Cancer Undergoing Surgery at the Iran Cancer Institute

Abstract: Background: Research on cancers with a high rate of mortality such as those occurring in the stomach requires using models which can provide a closer examination of disease processes and provide researchers with more accurate data. Various models have been designed based on this issue and the present study aimed at evaluating such models. Materials and Methods: Data from 330 patients with gastric cancer undergoing surgery at Iran Cancer Institute from 1995 to 1999 were analyzed. Cox-Snell Residuals and Akaike … Show more

“…The log-logistic model was finally chosen among semi-parametric and parametric ones since it showed the lowest Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and the highest Harrell C-index values [10]. This multivariate survival model was used to investigate the impact of patient-, liver-, and tumor-related variables on survival after each treatment.…”

“…Gastric cancer is a common disease in Asian Pacific area, and most medical resources are specially focused on the diagnosis and treatment of this disease (Ahmad et al, 2013;Atrkar-Roushan et al, 2013;Ma et al, 2013;Song et al, 2013;Suh et al, 2013;Tuncel et al, 2013;Zare et al, 2013;Zhang et al, 2013;Zhu et al, 2013). Combined chemotherapy was reported to be superior to the best supportive care in the man¬agement of MGC (Pyrhonen et al, 1995;Jo et al, 2007;Chen et al, 2013;Usakova et al, 2013).…”

“…[3][4][5] Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC) is commonly used to evaluate the goodness of fit. 3,6) The smaller the AIC value, the better the fitness. Other methods, such as Cox-Snell residuals and receiver operating characteristic curves, are also used to assess model accuracy.…”

“…Several studies have compared various survival regression methods to identify the most suitable model [ 3 - 5 ]. Akaike’s Information Criterion (AIC) is commonly used to evaluate the goodness of fit [ 3 , 6 ]. The smaller the AIC value, the better the fitness.…”
