Comparison between ultrasound and genetic testing for the early diagnosis of polycystic kidney disease in Persian and Exotic Shorthair cats

Abstract: Autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (AD-PKD) is common in Persians and Persians-related breeds. The aims of this study were to evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of early ultrasound examination and to compare ultrasound and genetic testing for early diagnosis. Sixty-three Persians and seven Exotic Shorthairs were considered. All underwent ultrasonographic and genetic testing (polymerase chain reaction/restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR/RFLP) assay) between 2.5 and 3.5 months of age (1… Show more

“…The sensitivity and specificity for the detection of PKD in Persian cats at an age of 3 months using ultrasonography has been shown to be 92.6 % and 91 %, respectively 8 . Results were 100 % repeatable and disease progression was noted in 75 % of cats over a 1-year period 45 but no data could be found for dogs.…”

“…1e3,5,12 In a recent study, however, ultrasound resulted to have a sensitivity of 96.2% at the age of 3 months. 15 The prevalence of PKD in Italy is about 41% in Persians and Exotic Shorthairs. 4 The prevalence of PKD in the Chartreux cats in Italy is unknown.…”

“…Unfortunately, none of the markers are specific for cancer or pathognomic for a specific disease but they may act as important supplementary tests with more conventional diagnostics. Screening programmes for veterinary patients are rarely performed but have been reported in feline nephrology and in veterinary orthopaedics 16,17 . However, screening programmes for early disease detection in veterinary oncology have not been performed.…”
